REPORT: Chicago Bears request interview with Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver

Late last week, Dian Russini from The Athletic reported that the Chicago Bears were doing their “homework” on several head coaching candidates, including Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. Now, according to Russini, the Bears have officially requested an interview with Miami’s defensive coordinator, as well as several other impressive candidates.

Weaver, 44, was a hot candidate on the market a year ago when he interviewed with the Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons for their vacant head coaching positions. Now, after a year in which he kept the Dolphins defense headed in the right direction — despite many injuries and other factors — the time may be right for Weaver to spread his wings and fly. But that would come at a cost to Mike McDaniel and his staff.

The Dolphins’ defense finished fourth in yards per game (314), tenth in points per game (21.4), ninth in rushing (103.7), and ninth in passing yards (210.7). However, Miami’s defense ranked bottom-5 in the league, averaging less than one turnover per game in 2024. Still, if the Bears are looking for the right guy and a pretty damn good defensive coordinator to boot, Weaver could quickly become the man in the Windy City.

Here’s what Miami’s defensive coordinator said late last week when asked what he and his agents were doing to prepare for potential head coaching interviews.

“Yeah, so it’s funny because I spoke to my agent last night, and he’s like, ‘What are you doing to prepare for those apps?’ And I’m like, ‘Absolutely nothing. Absolutely nothing.’ (laughter)

Weaver continued: “I’m so focused right now on just controlling what we can control, beating the Jets, and praying that we get the help we need in order to continue this run, because I think if we can get in, if we’re blessed with that opportunity, we can make some noise.”

Well, coach, it’s time to prepare for those head coaching interviews. But don’t worry, if things don’t go as planned, there will always be a spot for you on the Miami Dolphins. Maybe we will even get to see that Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, and Chop Robinson package that you spoke so highly of in 2025 and beyond!

What are your thoughts on defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver? Do you think he will get a head coaching job this go-around? How do you feel about the current state of the Dolphins? Let us know in the comments section below!
