Chop Robinson says Miami Dolphins’ Anthony Weaver demands ‘uncommon effort’

MIAMI GARDENS – Miami Dolphins’ first-round pick Chop Robinson was watching film of rising star pass rusher Jaelan Phillips and what he saw was clear.

“Uncommon effort,” Robinson said Thursday, after the second Dolphins training camp practice of the summer.

Uncommon effort is what Robinson also said incoming defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is demanding.

“Everybody doing their job,” Robinson said. “Everybody giving everything they’ve got. It’s uncommon effort every single day, and that’s how we play defense.”

Phillips, returning from a torn Achilles, has been seen running hard.

But it’s hard to know if Phillips or Bradly Chubb, with a torn knee ligament, will be ready for Week 1.

If not, Robinson could even be a Week 1 starter in 45 days against the Jaguars.

“I’m just focusing on practice,” Robinson said. “One day at a time, trying to get better, one percent better, not only as a player, but as a team, also as a defense. So I’m just taking it one day at a time, and when that time comes, that’s when the time comes.”

What does Robinson see as the difference between college and the NFL?

“It’s definitely way faster, just like I was saying when I first got here,” he said. “I already knew it was going to be faster. But just bigger guys moving as fast as you. You’ve just you got to step it up a notch, so that’s the biggest thing to adjust to, but I feel like I’m doing a good job adjusting to it.”

Robinson has had a few pressures in the first two days of practice.

Robinson had 11.5 sacks in three seasons at Penn State.

Chop Robinson has Miami Dolphins mentors

He has been listening to veterans like Emmanuel Ogbah and Shaq Barrett, who was around in the spring but did recently retire.

“Me and (Shaq) were going over the steps and the pass rush, when to step, when to swipe, at the same time, the different steps and the moves we’re using,” Robinson said. “So I was just able to talk to him about that, get tips from him. I added that to my game.”

When Phillips returns to the field, Robinson will benefit from watching his effort up close.

“I’ve been watching Jalen Phillips since he was in college,” Chop said. “I knew him when I was in high school, he was in college, so I was watching him. He was at Miami and he just played with an uncommon effort every single day. I’m surrounded by good people. I’m excited.”
