Air carrier Emirates, which in July 2021 launched direct Miami-to-Dubai flights at a rate of four flights per week and then expanded to seven, is about to service Bogotá via Miami.
Daily service starting June 3 is to link Dubai and Bogotá via Miami, with the airline saying it will be the first to host a variety of premium services on the Miami-Bogotá route.
The airline says the new service will have it serving 19 points across the US and Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia.
“Due to the high altitude of the city of Bogotá,” an announcement from Emirates said, “it is not possible to operate a non-stop flight from Dubai, deeming a stopover necessary. Miami was selected due to its tourism and trade links with Bogotá,” which has the second-largest population of any city in South America.
Emirates’ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft can fly 7,370 miles on a single fueling, according to the manufacturer’s website.
The Emirates flights will offer 354 seats across three cabins on the route. They offer lay-flat seats in both first and business classes, complimentary food and beverage, and a free baggage allowance.
“We are thrilled that Emirates will now connect its daily Dubai to Miami flight with Bogotá offering additional opportunities to welcome Colombian travelers to the Sunshine State,” said Dana Young, Visit Florida president and CEO.
American Airlines, Avianca and Latam already offer non-stop passenger service between Miami and Bogotá.
The Emirates planes also have more than 20 tons of capacity for cargo on each flight, which the airline says opens access “to more global markets for Colombian exports such as fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables, and other perishable goods.”
Miami International Airport was seventh globally in total international freight carried with 2.24 million tons in 2022. That year Colombia ranked second in the Miami Customs District in both exports and imports, as the nation received $5.25 billion in goods from the US and exported $4.25 billion.
Emirates’ freight division, SkyCargo, has flown since October 2020 carrying perishables, electronics and e-commerce goods, among other things, as well as champion horses from Miami to equestrian events worldwide.
