Skip Schumaker is optimistic about the Miami Marlins season
Things have been downright terrible for the Miami Marlins to start the season. One of the problems has been the bullpen. It’s been a very frustrating beginning to the season and hopefully some changes will take place to resolve that. Manager Skip Schumaker has some thoughts on that…
It was reasonable to expect that the Miami Marlins wouldn’t have too much trouble against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. Winning at least two out of four games at home seemed very likely. Losing all four however…that was not even imaginable. Of course that’s exactly what happened. I’m not going to do a recap of the games, but the fact that it happened is just too much.
Skip Schumaker spoke after the last game and mentioned that starting pitchers don’t pitch as much this early in the season. He said that this puts too much pressure on bullpens, which in turn does make sense, as it was mostly the bullpen that cost the team the games. He also pointed out that The Fish lost 3 out of 4 games last season in the beginning. The Fish then of course made the playoffs.
The injuries to starting pitchers Braxton Garrett, Eury Perez and Edward Cabrera surely didn’t help. If Braxton and Eury were there, the results almost certainly would’ve been different. Ryan Weathers and A.J. Puk would certainly not have gotten to start instead.
Skip had this to say:
“It starts with the starting pitching, that’s just the reality. It starts with them, and we have good enough starters to win every game this series, and definitely tomorrow. If we get five strong innings out of Max tomorrow, I feel really good about winning. But it has to start with the starting pitching and our defense. If we pitch and play defense, we have enough offense to break through.”
He’s talking about Max Meyer of course. We saw how that went down last night of course….Starting Pitcher Trevor Rogers isn’t particularly worried either, saying that he’s confident that the team will turn things around. I just hope that the Miami Marlins get on a winning streak.
