Lions re-sign top special teamer, while nose tackle departs for Miami

Allen Park — The Detroit Lions retained an important special teams piece Thursday evening, re-signing cornerback Khalil Dorsey. Terms of the deal weren’t immediately made available.

The Lions originally added Dorsey to their practice squad in the final month of the 2022 season. He made the 53-man roster out of training camp this year, but missed four games early in the season after a battle with rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition where the muscles break down.

Dorsey returned in Week 6 and ended up logging 248 special-team snaps on the season, often serving as a gunner on punt coverage and occasionally handling kickoff return duties.

With the Lions filling their nose tackle need by signing DJ Reader, the team no longer needed last year’s starter, Benito Jones. He found a new home in a familiar place, rejoining the Miami Dolphins on Thursday.

Jones appeared in six games for the Dolphins in 2020, but was waived by the team ahead of the 2022 season and claimed by the Lions off waivers. After filling a rotational role that year, he moved into the starting lineup last season, appearing in all 17 games and logging a career-high 567 defensive snaps.
