Much-needed makeover on the way for Miami airport

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A major makeover is in the works for parts of Miami International Airport.

Local 10 News has been reporting on issues at MIA ranging from broken elevators to outdated facilities.

Miami-Dade County has already committed money to fixing problems and modernizing amenities and now it’s announced $27 million dollars of federal money will be helping as well.

One of the projects already underway is a complete overhaul of the very outdated central terminal. This is an animation of how officials say it will look in the next few years. We are told these additional funds from the feds will offset the cost.

Passengers have complained about the lack of outlets, seats, and the run-down look of the central terminal. County officials say they applied for grant money to help fund the improvement and are happy to say they got the green light.

“This announcement today is so critical to the future, not only of this airport and all the people that pass through, here but to our hometown, Miami-Dade County,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said. “So we’re not talking about into the future, we’re talking right now. The future is now for this improvement.”

Money will also go towards a rehab of the Concourse E people mover. That’s not the same as the Skytrain, which was recently shut down for repairs and should be mostly up and running by March.
