CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Just a few months ago, J.D. Arteaga had a potential career backup plan – as a chef.
Fortunately for Hurricanes fans, Arteaga made his debut as a head baseball coach on Friday night, leading Miami to an 8-7 walk-off win over NJIT. Miami trailed 7-5 after six innings, but Carlos Perez’s RBI single won the game in the bottom of the ninth.
But back to Arteaga. He has lived his entire adult life in pursuit of Hurricanes glory – first as a star pitcher and, for the past 21 years, as pitching coach.
