The Dubai, United Arab Emirates-based carrier Emirates revealed it was seeking a new route offering in South America. The airline hopes to fly a service connecting Miami International Airport (MIA) in Florida to El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá, Colombia. On February 10, it was revealed that Emirates officially requested permission to serve this route with Colombia’s Civil Aviation Authority, Aeronautica Civil. Emirates has historically operated a cargo service along this route, but the airline will look to operate a passenger service as well.

Another South American route

Several years ago, Emirates began exploring the idea of operating a service out of Colombia. In 2021, the Colombia Civil Aviation Authority reached an agreement with the United Arab Emirates at the ICAO Air Service Negotiation Event. The new agreement allowed carriers based in the United Arab Emirates, which includes Emirates and Etihad, to operate flights to Bogotá from Miami up to seven times per week. The agreement also allowed this route frequency to be increased to multiple flights per day after a year of the initial route being established.

This service looks to be becoming much more of a reality recently. The airline officially requested this route with the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority. Per Portafolio, a public hearing has been set for 15:00 local time on February 16 to analyze the airline’s proposal. Aeronautica Civil will make a decision on the route offering after the hearing. If the route is approved, Emirates will operate the service with either a Boeing 777-200LR or 777-300ER, which holds 264 passengers and 310 passengers, respectively.

Miami service changes

Additionally, per One Mile At A Time, the airline also updated its schedule to change Miami to Dubai International Airport (DXB) routes, which may reflect this change. Currently, the airline operates a daily service between the two airports. Flight EK-213 departs Dubai at 3:10 local time and arrives in Miami at 11:00 local time. The return flight, EK-214, departs Miami at 21:10 local time and arrives in Dubai at 19:25 local time the next day. This schedule will remain until June 2, later this year.

However, beginning on June 3, the schedule has been updated. The new EK-213 flight departs Dubai at 2:15 local time and arrives in Miami at 10:05 local time. The return flight, EK-214, departs Miami at 00:45 local time and arrives in Dubai at 23:00 local time the next day.

This route change will provide ample time to utilize the aircraft on a service to Bogotá from Miami. The flight would take about four hours in each direction and allow the airline to use the Boeing 777, which operates on the Miami to Dubai service.

Emirates already runs several services in South America. It operates a service at Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG) in Brazil, and São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) in Brazil. All of these services route through the airline’s main hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB).
