Former Miami-Dade School Board Vice Chair Lubby Navarro arrested; accused of stealing money from schools

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A former member of the Miami-Dade School Board was arrested Thursday morning, according to sources.

The sources, who have knowledge of the investigation, identified the former school board member and vice chair as Lubby Navarro and said the investigation pertains to “financial impropriety.”

Navarro was taken into custody around 8:40 a.m. and is being booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

According to sources, Navarro is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from Miami-Dade County public schools and using that money for her personal expenses.

Sources said while the charges only stem from 2022 at this time, her arrest warrant is nearly 100 pages long and the investigation into her actions remains ongoing.

Navarro was appointed to the school board in 2015 by then-Gov. Rick Scott.

She announced in December 2022 that she would be leaving the school board.

Her resignation came a day after a federal judge made a ruling on a new state law that bans politicians from being lobbyists.

Navarro at the time was a registered lobbyist for the South Broward Hospital District.

Further details surrounding Navarro’s arrest were not immediately known.

More information is expected to be released during a news conference Thursday afternoon at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
