Nick Kyrgios reacts to destroying Fabio Fognini in Miami
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios entered his Miami Masters third round match with an aggressive mindset and it paid off as the Australian claimed a straight-set win over Fabio Fognini. Kyrgios, who was granted a wildcard into Miami, saw off Fognini 6-2 6-4 to progress into the last-16 at the tournament.
Kyrgios has been playing well lately as in Indian Wells he reached the quarterfinal before losing a tight contest to Rafael Nadal. A deep run in Indian Wells provided Kyrgios a boost of confidence and he came to Miami determined to make a strong result.
Fognini didn’t stand a chance as Kyrgios converted his break point opportunities, all while not allowing the Italian a single break point chance. “I wanted to keep the momentum going,” Kyrgios said in his on-court interview, per the ATP Tour website.
“As soon as I had break points I wanted to take them. I served well and I am happy to be through. I am just returning well. My doubles has helped me a lot on my singles court. The way I am serving and returning is quite a sight to see”.
Kyrgios routinely handled Fognini
Kyrgios made a strong start to the match, having broken Fognini in the first game of the match. Kyrgios earned his second break in the seventh game, before routinely serving out for the first set in the following game.
After easily losing the first set, Fognini started serving much better in the second set. Fognini didn’t allow Kyrgios a single break point in his first four service games of the second set but the Italian completely lost his focus in the ninth game as the Australian broke to love to take a 5-4 lead.
After earning the first break of the second set in the ninth game, Kyrgios had no problems serving out for the match in the following game. Kyrgios knows what it takes to make a deep run in Miami, having reached back-to-back semifinals at the tournament in 2016 and 2017. It remains to be seen how far can Kyrgios go in Miami this year.
