FC Barcelona Icon Iniesta Agrees To Join Messi At Inter Miami: Reports
FC Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta has an agreement in principle to join former teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami, according to a report from Offsider in Spain shared by SPORT.
The scorer of the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final is currently out of contract after his deal with Japanese club Vissel Kobe expired.
In a teary press conference announcing his departure from the Japanese outfit, the iconic midfielder stated his intention to carry on playing at the age of 39.
“I want to keep playing football. I feel like I am capable of still playing,” the Spaniard told journalists.
“But as this chapter closes, we’ll see what’s possible. I want to finish my career on the pitch playing, and this is what I’m hoping to do. [But] I have to tell you the truth, I don’t know,” he added.
Inter Miami are currently racking up ex-Barca stars at will.
After convincing Messi to join them, and turn down a second stint in Catalonia plus a big money offer from Al-Hilal which would have paid him a reported €500 million ($560 million) a year to return to the top of Forbes’ list of the World’s Highest-Paid Athletes, the David Beckham co-owned franchise has also acquired ex-Blaugrana skipper Sergio Busquets.
On Wednesday, Beckham’s partner Jorge Mas confirmed that the duo will also be joined by Jordi Alba.
“I believe that Jordi Alba has signed his contract,” Mas told TyC Sports from Messi’s homeland Argentina.
“I know that [Inter Miami head coach] Tata Martino is counting on him for the second Leagues Cup match,” he added.
Mas discussed the possible arrival of one of the trio’s closest friends in Luis Suarez too.
“There’s been a lot of talk about Luis Suarez coming. We haven’t held direct talks with Gremio or with Suarez,” Mas revealed.
“I don’t know how Luis Suarez can leave Gremio. But if he does, we are free to talk to Luis and bring him to Inter Miami. That possibility would be there.”
According to SPORT, the Brazilian club won’t part with Suarez unless Miami meet his $70 million release clause that is astronomical for a 36-year-old with knee issues.
Though Miami might have to miss out on the Uruguayan, they could be on the verge of landing Iniesta free of charge if Offsider‘s report is accurate.
As shown in a friendly against Barca for Vissel Kobe last month, Iniesta still has something to offer in a league such as the MLS.
With his signing, Inter Miami would boast four leading figures from Barca’s last Champions League win in 2015 when the Catalans did a second historic double on the orders of current Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique.
