Miami four-star wideout Jacory Barney commits to Nebraska over hometown Hurricanes

Nebraska football’s incredible recruiting run in June continued into the start of July.

Miami Palmetto athlete Jacory Barney picked the Huskers Saturday night over Miami and Texas A&M, two programs that hosted Barney on June official visits after NU hosted him June 2. The 6-foot, 160-pound Barney received offers nationwide — including Michigan, Tennessee and Utah — before settling on his top three.

It seemed likely, after last weekend’s official visit to Miami, that the four-star recruit would stay home and become a Hurricane.

On Saturday night, on Instagram, Barney announced a shocker. Husker fireworks on the First instead of the Fourth. He was joining Nebraska’s 2024 class.

“When I went up there I was expecting just cornfields, but it was like a home away from home,” Barney said after he tugged on a red Nebraska hat. “I fell in love with the staff. They’ve been recruiting me ever since got word of me. When they came in and they heard about me, they’ve been on me 100%, they’ve been on me heavy.

“They believe in me, and I believe in them.”

NU is now stuffed with pass-catching options at tight end (Carter Nelson, Keelan Smith and Ian Flynt) and receiver (Isaiah McMorris, Dae’vonn Hall, Quinn Clark and Barney.)

Barney told 247 Sports Friday that he spoke to five different coaches associated with Miami, trying to convince him to commit. Ultimately, the opportunity with NU — and 2024 quarterback commit Danny Kaelin — won out.

Kaelin, the Bellevue West quarterback who won Elite 11 honors in June, has played a major role in building the offensive skill class in recent weeks. That includes Thunderbird teammates McMorris and Hall, running back Kewan Lacy and Ainsworth tight end Nelson, who committed to Nebraska after listening to his future teammates chat at breakfast.

At the start of June, NU had just Kaelin, Smith and Flynt in the class for offensive skill players. Four receivers, a tight end and a running back have jumped aboard since. Two offensive linemen — Jake Peters and Landen Davidson — have committed, too, leaving Nebraska with an almost full recruiting class on the offensive side of the ball.

Almost. NU still seeks at least one offensive tackle for the 2024 class. Logan-Magnolia (Iowa) four-star Grant Brix visited Nebraska, Kansas State, Alabama and Oklahoma in June. Two potential tackles, Omaha Central’s Caleb Pyfrom and Lyndon (Kansas) standout Kaedin Massey, picked Illinois and Kansas State last week.

Barney’s commit pushed Nebraska to 23 overall in the cycle.

“They recruit hard,” Barney said. “With Matt Rhule coming in, and all the players committing, I feel like we all believe in them. I feel like they believe in us. And I feel like with this South Florida talent and this Miami talent, we’re bringing it to Lincoln.”
