Eastern Airlines To Begin Flights Between Miami & Santo Domingo This Month
Eastern Airlines has announced that on December 23rd, it will launch a route connecting Miami International Airport (MIA) and Santo Domingo’s Las Américas International Airport (SDQ). The flight will be flown once a month and will be the airline’s only regular route. The small airline anticipates steady demand for the route connecting Southern Florida to the Dominican Republic.

The new route will be operated on a Boeing 767-200, offering 212 seats per flight. The new route will make Eastern the eighth North American airline to operate flights between the US and Santo Domingo. The airline has also announced that flights from New York to Guayaquil will no longer be available. This makes the SDQ-MIA route the only regularly serviced route operated by the airline.
The first flight between the two cities will occur on December 23rd. The second will take place on January 20th, the third on February 17th, and the fourth on March 17th. The airline anticipates seeing just enough demand every month to schedule one flight connecting the cities. It hopes that, in time, it will be able to further expand its network offering more connections for passengers traveling to and from Latin America.
An example of perseverance
Eastern Airlines is a name familiar to many who remember the airline’s disappearance over three decades ago. In 2018 a new airline called Eastern Airlines emerged as an airline revival. The airline was first reborn as a charter airline operating under the name Dynamic Airways. However, the airline eventually gained rights to the name Eastern Airlines and has used the name ever since. The airline planned to fly routes to Central and South America, offering connection to its two US hubs, New York and Miami.

The airline planned to target secondary airports to create unique flight offerings that did not directly compete with larger, more established air transit operators. It also planned to eventually operate flights between the US and secondary Chinese airports. While the airline was applying for all the necessary certifications and permissions to operate these routes, it was staying busy by operating as an on-demand air service, otherwise known as a Part 135 Charter Operation.
On January 12th, 2020, the airline launched its first regularly scheduled flight connecting New York with Guayaquil, Ecuador. By the end of 2020, the airline had expanded its network to reach 12 destinations across the American continents through one of the toughest years in airline history. Unfortunately for the airline, once the rapid expansion slowed, it began to realize that it did not have the demand to keep all twelve routes open.
Throughout the following months, the airline slowly cut back routes until it now only operates one flight between New York and Guayaquil, but even this will be cut, leaving just the one monthly route between MIA and SDQ. Despite cutting routes, the airline is far from failing. Its fleet of 767s is currently operating charter flights around the world. The airline has adapted to an ever-changing market allowing it to survive and thrive.
