Miami Ends A&T’s Three-Game Winning Streak

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – North Carolina A&T’s Jazmin Harris scored 18 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field, and Maleia Bracone added 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting.

But it was not enough to slow down the University of Miami on Friday as the Aggies endured a 97-54 loss to the Hurricanes in women’s basketball non-conference action at the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament inside the Watsco Center.

A&T’s two top scorers on the season, Harris and Bracone, also led the Aggies in rebounding with five apiece. Bracone added a game-high five assists to her totals. The Aggies (3-2) saw their three-game winning streak end. Miami improved to 6-1.

Miami used an early 16-1 run in the first quarter to build a lead. The Aggies went six minutes without a field goal during the run before freshman Keona Curtis ended the drought with a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter to make it a 24-9 game. But Miami’s Karla Erjavec answered with a three to end the first, with Miami holding a 27-9 advantage.

The Hurricanes increased their advantage in the second quarter and headed into the locker room with a 56-21 halftime lead.

But A&T found its rhythm in the third quarter, shooting 45.8 percent from the floor in the game behind 78.6 percent shooting (11-for-14) in the third quarter. Bracone scored 11 of her 16 points in the third quarter, including three 3-pointers. Harris scored eight points in the quarter on 4-for-4 shooting as A&T outscored the Hurricanes 25-23 in the third.

However, Miami’s lead proved to be too insurmountable. Lazaria Spearman led the way for the Hurricanes with 12 points. Kashae Dwyer and Haley Cavinder added 11 points each. The Aggies face Arkansas-Pine Bluff Sunday at noon in the consolation game of the Thanksgiving tournament.
