Mazur’s Hat Trick, Chrona’s Shutout Leads No. 4 Denver Past Miami

OXFORD, Ohio – Sophomore forward Carter Mazur recorded a natural hat trick and senior goaltender Magnus Chrona stopped all 24 shots he faced to lead the No. 3 Denver Pioneers hockey team to a 4-0 shutout victory against the Miami RedHawks on Friday night at Goggin Ice Center.
 
The win in the NCHC opener was DU’s first on the road this season (1-2-0) and extended the team winning streak to a season-long three games.
 
Denver (5-2-0) and Miami (4-2-1) wrap up their weekend set on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT. The series finale will be broadcasted on NCHC.tv.
 
Mazur’s three goals marked his first career hat trick, with sophomore Massimo Rizzo and senior-transfer Casey Dornbach picking up assists on each marker. Dornbach recorded his 100th career point on Mazur’s tally in the second period that made it a 2-0 game at the time, and his three helpers in the contest extended his team scoring lead to 11 points on the season (4g/7a).
 
Behind Dornbach on the scoring list is Mazur (8g/2a) and Rizzo (2g/8a), who are tied for second on DU with 10 points each.
 
Mazur tallied in each period, with him scoring on loose pucks in the first two frames before chipping in a shot from the right of the crease with 3:55 remaining in the third stanza. It was the first hat trick of the season and the first since Feb. 4, 2022 when Carter Savoie had three markers against St. Cloud State.
 
Sophomore-transfer Tristan Broz tallied late in the third period for his first goal as a Pioneer, finding twine with a wrister after a RedHawks turnover in their own end.
 
Denver outshot Miami 38-24 in the contest, as Chrona made seven saves in the first, nine in the second and eight in the third. It was Chrona’s first clean sheet since a 5-0 win at Colorado College on March 4 of last season and the 10th of his career, tying him with Marc Cheverie (2007-2010) for the fourth-most in program history.
 
The Pioneers are now 13-1-0 in the last 14 meetings against the RedHawks and have won seven straight contests, their longest winning streak in the history of the series that dates back to 1986. Overall, DU holds a 27-13-3 all-time record against Miami.
 
POSTGAME NOTES

• Senior captain Justin Lee appeared in his 100th career game.
• Casey Dornbach had two assists to give him 100 career points. He is also on his second three-game point streak of the year and has points in six of seven contests this season.
• Carter Mazur had his first career hat trick and recorded his second multi-goal game of the season (Oct. 8 vs. Maine) and the fourth of his career.
• Massimo Rizzo’s three assists were a career high and tied his personal best for points.
• DU has scored a power-play goal in three straight games and in six of seven contests this year.
• The Pioneers improved to 11-5-0 all-time in Oxford against the RedHawks.

2nd Period
2:53 DU (2-0) – PPG, Carter Mazur knocked in a rebound off a shot from Massimo Rizzo with 32 seconds left on a 5-on-3 power play.
 
3rd Period
16:05 DU (3-0) – Carter Mazur chipped in the puck from the right of the crease after passes from Massimo Rizzo and Casey Dornbach.
18:17 DU (4-0) – Tristan Broz took advantage of a turnover and scored unassisted with a wrist shot from the mid-slot.
