Compass CEO Robert Reffkin to Speak at TRD Miami Showcase

Prior to Compass, Reffkin worked at investment firm Goldman Sachs and had a stint as a White House fellow before that. In 2012, he co-founded Urban Compass, which he would spend the next decade building into the nation’s largest real estate brokerage by sales volume.

The startup drew record amounts of funding from investors including SoftBank. It expanded rapidly, snapping up smaller brokerages and tech companies while garnering criticism from competitors for its aggressive recruiting practices.

After years of aggressive growth, Compass is now in cost-cutting mode as it aims to stem its losses and become profitable at last. Its executives, including Reffkin, believe they have a path forward, though critics have questioned their ability to right the ship in a down market. In either case, the industry will be watching.
