Syracuse women’s basketball starts fast, holds off Miami for 18th win
Sophie Burrows and Laila Phelia each scored 21 points as the Syracuse women’s basketball team topped Miami in an ACC game Sunday in Coral Gables, Fla.
The win lifts SU to 8-3 in the ACC and 18-4 overall. Miami dropped to 4-7 and 12-10.
Burrows, who hit five 3-pointers, had 16 second-half points. Phelia, meanwhile, was 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Uche Izoje pulled down 12 rebounds for the Orange, while Dominique Darius added eight points and eight rebounds.
The Orange jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but the Hurricanes bounced back to score the next nine points to tie it up. A 3-pointer by Shy Hawkins, though, gave the Orange back the lead for good.
The Orange took a 46-35 lead into the fourth quarter. After Miami scored the first four points of the quarter to cut the Orange lead to 46-39, the Orange went on a 12-0 run to build the lead up to 19 points with 5:28 left.
The Hurricanes rallied in the final minutes, but couldn’t get any closer than five points.
Syracuse faces Boston College on the road on Thursday.
