Miami RedHawks Complete MCBB’s 1st Undefeated Regular Season Since 2021 With Win vs. Ohio

The Miami RedHawks will finish the 2025-26 season as the only undefeated team in D1 men’s basketball.

Miami (Ohio) claimed an 110-108 overtime win against Ohio on Friday night to improve to 31-0 on the season and 18-0 in the Mid-American Conference.

The victory marked Miami’s first road win against Ohio since 2011 and took the RedHawks one step closer to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2007.

The last men’s college basketball team to claim an undefeated regular season was Gonzaga in 2020-21.

Before then, Wichita State (2013-14) and Kentucky (2014-15) were the most recent men’s college basketball teams to have finished the regular season without a loss.

The RedHawks and Bobcats traded leads early in Friday’s matchup before Miami pulled away late in the first half.

Ohio launched a late comeback to send the game to overtime before two late free throws from Peter Suder and a clutch last-second defensive rebound sealed the win for Miami.

Eian Elmer led the RedHawks with 32 points in the win, while Trey Perry put up 21 from the bench in the victory.

The RedHawks had the 282nd most difficult strength of schedule this season, according to KenPom. Miami coach Travis Steele recently told ESPN’s Myron Medcalf the RedHawks have had difficulty scheduling opponents wary of a potential upset.

Miami came just short of an NCAA Tournament bid with a 25-9 record last season.

The RedHawks, who went into Friday’s matchup as the No. 19 team in the AP poll, are now hoping their historic undefeated record will earn the program its first March Madness bid in 19 years.

Only 20 undefeated teams have ever entered the NCAA Tournament, per NCAA.com’s Daniel Wilco. The last program to enter the tournament with a perfect regular season record and go on to win the championship was Indiana in 1976.

The most recent undefeated NCAA Tournament entry was the Gonzaga team that complete a perfect regular season under Mark Few in 2020-21. The Bulldogs went all the way to the championship before losing to Baylor.

Before they look to make their own NCAA Tournament run, the RedHawks will start out the MAC conference tournament next Friday. Miami could make its bid for a bracket spot even stronger with a conference championship win.
