Miami mayor asks drivers for patience as FPL upgrades prompt street closures
MIAMI — Miami Mayor Elieen Higgins asked drivers for patience on Friday and for months to come as Florida Power & Light’s crews work on upgrades.
The to-do list, which includes changing some 90 power poles in the city and adding miles of underground lines, will prompt temporary street closures.
Higgins said the sacrifice of making way for the heavy machinery will pay off since the city will have a more reliable power grid during storms.
“We all know storms are getting fiercer, and sometimes the power can go out, and these hardened lines means that is less likely to happen,” Higgins said.
Higgins was with Jack Eble, a spokesman with FPL, who said the grid hardening initiative’s upgrades are funded by a storm protection plan fund, which customers contribute to monthly.
“From a load standpoint, it’s rated for extreme wins, so this is part of the effort that we do throughout the state to build a stronger grid for our customers,” Eble said.
FPL and the city estimate the work will continue through September.
