Suspect jailed after being shot by Miami-Dade deputy

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A suspect was booked into the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center Wednesday, a day after being shot by a deputy in northwest Miami-Dade.

The suspect has been identified by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office as 23-year-old William Paulemon, of North Miami Beach.

According to MDSO, the shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and 87th Street.

Authorities said deputies from the Robbery Intervention Team (RID) tried to pull over a black Mercedes-Benz in the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and 71st Street, but the driver, identified as Paulemon, fled.

MDSO aviation units that were overheard then observed the vehicle striking a civilian vehicle in the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and 87th Street, authorities said.

According to his arrest report, Paulemon exited the vehicle while holding two guns pointed at a deputy.

Authorities said the deputy fired at the suspect, striking him once in the left buttock.

Deputies then provided first aid to Paulemon until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel arrived, at which time he was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition.

A woman who was driving the civilian vehicle was not injured nor were any deputies, authorities confirmed.

According to online jail records, Paulemon is facing one count of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, two counts of displaying a firearm while committing a felony and one count each of reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage.

His mugshot was not showing in the online inmate database Thursday morning.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
