No. 20 Miami Falls at No. 3 North Dakota in OT

GRAND FORKS, N.D.– No. 20 Miami scored three goals in the second period to take a lead on the road, but No. 3 North Dakota rallied late and went on to edge the RedHawks 4-3 in overtime Saturday night.

Matteo Drobac made 40 saves for Miami (17-11-2, 8-10-2 NCHC) for the second night in a row, helping the Red and White earn one point in the NCHC standings with the result. Abram Wiebe produced two points, including the game-winning goal, for the Fighting Hawks (23-7-0, 15-5-0 NCHC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 15:52 1st (North Dakota 1-0) | EJ Emery opened the scoring for the home team late in the first period, connecting from the right circle after Sam Laurila and Dylan James had relayed the puck around the offensive zone.
  • 1:22 2nd (Miami 1-1) | Miami responded early in the middle stanza on a goal by Doug Grimes. Ryan Smith started the play by skating the puck behind the goal and then sending it out to Ryder Thompson at the point. With Grimes and Maximilion Helgeson both in front of the net, the first redirect attempt from the pair of forwards was no good, but Grimes battled to regain the puck and scored from his knees to make it 1-1.
  • 3:13 2nd (Miami 2-1) | Less than two minutes later, the RedHawks took their first lead of the weekend. Michael Quinn received a pass from Ilia Morozov at the blue line and fired a deep shot, with the rebound falling in front of Kocha Delic and David Deputy. Delic immediately deposited a shot past UND goaltender Jan Špunar for the go-ahead goal.
  • 13:24 2nd (Miami 3-1) | The Red and White doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Helgeson won an offensive-zone faceoff and Smith muscled the puck away from two Fighting Hawks near the boards before beating Špunar for Miami’s third goal of the period.
  • 0:29 3rd (North Dakota 3-2) | After a North Dakota goalie change at the second intermission, the hosts got off to a quick start in the third period with a Mac Swanson one-timer off assists from Wiebe and Ollie Josephson to trim Miami’s lead to 3-2.
  • 18:09 3rd (North Dakota 3-3) | The Fighting Hawks scored the equalizer on a power play late in the third period, pulling goaltender Gibson Homer for a 6-on-4 advantage. Jake Livanavage found the back of the net on the rebound for an extra-attacker goal to even the score at 3-3. Ellis Rickwood and Keaton Verhoeff were credited with assists.
  • 1:35 OT (North Dakota 4-3) | Wiebe ended the game 95 seconds into overtime, spinning away from a RedHawk in the neutral zone after passes from Cole Reschny and Dylan James and then driving to the goal for the game-winner.
