North Miami Beach food giveaway helps hundreds of families amid rising costs
NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Hundreds of families lined up Saturday at a North Miami Beach parking lot to receive free groceries as part of a community food giveaway aimed at easing the strain of rising living costs.
The event was made possible through partnerships between the city of North Miami Beach, 99 Jamz, South Promo and other organizations, with a goal of feeding at least 500 families.
“I live with my brother-in-law, my sister-in-law, paying rent with them and just trying to get by and pay my bills,” said Shawn Reilly, who received food at the event.
Organizers said the giveaway was about more than food — it was about bringing the community together.
“We always want to bring the community together someway somehow,” said DJ Nasty of 99 Jamz, who helped organize the event and has been involved in similar efforts for years.
DJ Nasty, whose real name is Randall Floyd, said the need to give back is greater now than ever as prices continue to climb.
“It’s tough. Especially this day and age. Eggs are high. Bread is high. Everything is just high, so to be able to provide some type of relief with everything that’s going on, it’s the best feeling in the world,” he said.
The giveaway comes as the cost of living in South Florida remains more than 20 percent higher than the national average. For families who showed up, the groceries offered at least temporary relief.
“Times are tough. Work is scarce and things are getting way more expensive every day,” said Kristen Olmo, a mother of five. “This helps out big time with a family of five.”
For Reilly, the impact was emotional. “It means the world to me,” he said. “Sorry, I’m just very thankful.”
