NEXT Weather Alert: Freeze warning in effect for Miami-Dade, Broward as wind brings chilling air

A freeze warning is in effect for parts of South Florida as the NEXT Weather Team tracks a significant arctic blast approaching the region.

Heavy rain from the storms preceding the cold front will move through Broward, Monroe and Miami-Dade Counties starting around 11 a.m. and lasting through the early evening.

At 2 p.m., a wind advisory goes into effect for the entire state. South Florida will see sustained winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Following the winds, the cold arctic air will sweep across the Sunshine State, plunging real temperatures into the lower 30s.

A freeze warning was issued shortly after, which remains in effect for the inland metro areas in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, with Miami hitting 35 degrees. The last time these metros had a freeze warning was between Jan. 9 and 10, 2010.

The cold advisory has also expanded to the Upper Keys.

By Sunday morning, some interior areas of the counties will be near freezing. The wind chills will push the feels-like temperatures into the low 20s across the entire metroplex.

It is too dry for snow in South Florida but there is a possibility of snow in the Tampa Bay area on Sunday. There is also a band of snow coming south from west of Jacksonville; however, this is not associated with what might bring snow to Tampa.

Another blast of cold air will arrive Sunday night into Monday morning, which will likely keep the NEXT Weather Alert in effect until then and should end by Monday afternoon, unless frost looks possible for early Tuesday.
