The Orange (12-7, 3-3 ACC) need a win on Saturday, if they hope to stay positive in the ACC. Syracuse has lost two in a row against conference opponents, including Wednesday’s close 76-74 loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies.
The Orange showcased their shooting prowess early, knocking down a total of 10 three-pointers and keeping things competitive throughout. Five Syracuse players reached double figures in scoring, with J.J. Starling leading the way. He finished with 12 points and hit some key shots to help keep Syracuse in it. Nate Kingz added 11 points, including a trio of threes, and sophomore Donnie Freeman anchored the boards with nine rebounds.
The Hokies were led by Ben Hammond, who was the game’s top scorer with 24 points. He was nearly perfect (12-for-13) from the free-throw line late, and also made an impact with six steals, tying a program record for Virginia Tech in an ACC matchup. The Hokies leaned on their free throws down the stretch to secure the edge.
After trading leads throughout the second half, Virginia Tech took control with a 10-2 run in the final minutes, sparked by Hammond’s scoring and tough defense. Syracuse didn’t quit, though, and Tyler Betsey hit a big three followed with clutch free throws. The Orange even forced a turnover in the final minute for a chance to tie. They looked for the game-tying shot from beyond the arc, but it rimmed out, giving the Hokies just enough separation.
Now Syracuse hosts Miami (15-4, 4-2 ACC), who will present a tough challenge. The Orange will hope for some home court advantage against a team just as hungry for a win as they are. Miami is also coming off a pair of losses, including Tuesday’s 65-63 loss to Florida State. Syracuse has a 20-13 all-time lead in this series.
