CF Montréal is finalizing a deal to acquire Argentine center back Tomás Avilés from Inter Miami, sources briefed on the deal told The Athletic.

The deal includes a purchase option, sources added.

The move makes sense for all parties. Montréal gets a talented young player, who was acquired by Miami as the most expensive center back in league history with a fee worth around $7 million. Avilés gets a change of scenery and clearer path at minutes while the departure solves a roster problem for Miami.

One of Miami’s U-22 initiative players needed to depart the club this winter. Avilés made the most sense given lack of expected playing time and now he heads to Montréal.

Avilés, 21, is an Argentine youth international. He joined Miami in the summer of 2023, shortly after Lionel Messi arrived. Avilés made 87 appearances in Miami but lost a regular role by the end of the 2025 season and in the playoffs. Miami has since signed Brazilian center back Micael, who will be a key starter, and is bringing back Noah Allen and Maxi Falcon.

Montréal has been active for a while in the intra-MLS market looking for young players and doing so successfully. The club acquired Djordje Mihailovic, Alistair Johnston and George Campbell from other MLS clubs before transferring them abroad after individual success. They did the same with Dante Sealy, who was traded this winter to the Colorado Rapids.

Montréal has the likes of Jalen Neal, Brandan Craig, Prince Owusu and Brayan Vera as other key players acquired from within MLS.
