Protesters join nationwide ‘Free America Walkout’ at Gimenez’s office in Miami-Dade
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — About two dozen protesters joined the nationwide “Free America Walkout” outside of Rep. Carlos A. Giménez’s office in Miami-Dade County.
The protest by the Women’s March group marked the anniversary of President Donald Trump’s inauguration after his election to a second term.
“President Trump is considering all options that lead toward a #Cuba free from the narcoterrorist dictatorship that has destroyed the homeland,” Giménez wrote on X Tuesday. “Our exile has never been better represented in the White House than it is now with Trump and Marco Rubio. We place our trust in them.”
Vanessa Brito, a Democratic organizer, gathered the small crowd of anti-Trump protesters outside Giménez’s office at 14221 SW 120 St., in The Hammocks.
“They don’t see him doing anything for the district,” Brito said about Giménez, the U.S. representative for Florida’s 28th congressional district since 2023.
Brady Booton, a marine operations technician, and Cindy Hewitt, an advocate against animal cruelty, were among the protesters who stood with Brito.
“He’s supposed to be carrying out the will of the people … seems to me he’s more concerned about carrying out the will of the Republican Party,” Booton said.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis was also on protesters’ minds.
“I feel that our kind, compassionate nation that welcomed all immigrants and was the land of opportunity has become anything but,” Hewitt said. “We could not survive as a nation without immigrant populations.”
Giménez, who was at the CFP Championship game with Trump on Monday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, was back in Washington, D.C., to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
On X Tuesday evening, Giménez described Machado as his friend, “sister in the struggle,” and a true inspiration for those who love freedom.
“It is a tremendous honor to receive her in Congress as the heroine, liberator, and Nobel Peace Prize winner that she is,” Giménez wrote. “Soon we will do the same in a free Venezuela!”
