Indiana vs. Miami live updates, score: Follow CFP national championship game

Indiana is going for its first national championship in school history while Miami is trying to snap a streak without a championship that dates back to 2001.

If the Hoosiers win, not only will they cap one of the best seasons in modern college football history, they’ll extend a Big Ten title streak to three seasons after Michigan’s win in 2023 and Ohio State’s victory a season ago. Miami, meanwhile, would complete an improbable run to the title after the Hurricanes were the final team in the 12-team field.

CFP title game: No. 1 Indiana (15-0) vs. No. 10 Miami (13-2)

With Indiana coming in as a significant favorite, Miami’s best shot may be leaning on a defensive line that has been a dominant playoff force. The Hurricanes have been able to beat up opposing offensive lines so far, but this Indiana offensive line is better than any line that Miami has faced in its three playoff games. And leading the charge on offense is the Hoosiers’ Heisman-winning QB Fernando Mendoza, who has been his usual outstanding self in these playoffs.

Miami’s chances of an upset also hinge largely on Malachi Toney breaking a big play or two. Can QB Carson Beck get the ball to his star freshman receiver while also avoiding any big mistakes? And can the Miami run game gain enough ground on a tough Indiana front seven? Those are the questions that will likely decide the national championship on Monday.

Facing a third-and-8, Indiana’s Kaelon Black burst through the line for a 21-yard gain and now the Hoosiers are on the doorstep!

Indiana thought it had a touchdown on the next play on a completion from Fernando Mendoza to Charlie Becker, but Becker stepped out on the sideline inside the 10.

The Hoosiers have moved out past midfield after several completions by Fernando Mendoza and a defensive pass interference call on Miami.

If Indiana is going to keep stuffing Miami on the ground, Beck is going to have to carry the offensive load. Can he do it? He threw for more yards in the Fiesta Bowl (268) than he did in the first two playoff games combined (241).

Indiana’s defense has just suffocated Miami thus far in the game. The Canes still only have one first down and just 18 yards.

The Hoosiers will have the ball back at their own 15.

The Hoosiers weren’t able to do anything with the ball on the next drive and will punt when the second quarter begins.

That was an impressive quarter for both defenses. Indiana’s defense held Miami to just 18 total yards while the Canes allowed just 83 to the Hoosiers. We’ll see if either offense can make a breakthrough in the second quarter.

The Hoosiers paid a price for those points. Check out this debatable hit on Fernando Mendoza while he was carrying out a fake midway through the drive:

We’re accustomed to Indiana’s scoring drives looking a lot easier than that drive did. But the Hoosiers did a nice job of making Miami’s defenders make tackles.

That sounds basic, but Miami’s not a good tackling unit even if the Hurricanes’ defense is very good overall.

  • Yahoo Sports Staff

Well, the Hoosiers’ drive petered inside the red zone, but they still got on the scoreboard first with a 34-yard field goal by Nico Radicic.

The Hoosiers are inside the 20 now after a TOUGH third-down run by Kaelon Black. It’s another first down for Indiana.

Fernando Mendoza found Omar Cooper across the middle on a shallow crossing route for the game’s first chunk play.

It’s a 25-yard catch and run for the Hoosiers receiver and now they’re out past midfield with a fresh set of downs.

Three possessions, two first downs, three punts. Neither quarterback has settled in just yet.

The Hoosiers have it back at their own 29.

And we all know how that game unfolded.

  • Yahoo Sports Staff

The big question coming into the game was whether Miami’s vaunted front could get Fernando Mendoza off his spot and make him uncomfortable.

After one first down, the Canes did just that on a third-and-long and the Hoosiers were forced to punt it right back.

Miami would’ve had good field position, but a holding penalty will push them back to near their own 20.

The Canes got a first down with a mix of Mark Fletcher runs and short passes to Malachi Toney, but that’s all they could do with it before failing to convert on a third-and-long.

Indiana’s first possession will start at its own 5-yard line.

Pretty clear that Miami wants to get the ball in Malachi Toney’s hands as much as possible. He was targeted three times and had two catches before that punt.

The Hurricanes will have the ball first.

    It’s gametime!

  • Yahoo Sports Staff

Judging by various media reports, the crowd is roughly a 60-40 split in Indiana’s favor.

Next up is the coin toss and then we’ll be underway!
