Univ. of Miami’s CFP run set to earn school large payout

The Univ. of Miami’s run to the CFP National Championship has “already been a boon for the athletic department and the university as a whole,” according to Jordan McPherson of the MIAMI HERALD. Conferences earn payouts for each of their teams getting to specific stages of the CFP, with $4M for making the field, $4M for reaching the quarterfinals, $6M for reaching the semifinals and $6M for making the national championship. How the conferences divide the money is “up to them.” The ACC gives “all the money earned directly to the team(s) that earned it,” so Miami will “receive the entire” $20M payout it earned the ACC for making the national championship. Miami AD Dan Radakovich yesterday said that “no funds have been specifically earmarked yet.” A Miami spokesperson previously said that the money will “go toward general operation of the athletic department,” though “some likely will contribute to UM’s NIL fund.” McPherson noted Miami hopes that the “success this year and the benefits they have received from it will help ensure UM stays among college football’s elite beyond this season” (MIAMI HERALD, 1/12).
