North Miami man accused of attacking roommate with machete, liquor bottle on Christmas Day

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — A North Miami man was arrested on Christmas Day after allegedly attacking his roommate with a machete and glass bottle, authorities said.

North Miami police identified the man Monday as 27-year-old Macksouel Desir.

The attack occurred around 8:20 a.m. at a home along Northwest Seventh Avenue.

Police said the victim and Desir lived together as roommates.

They said the dispute began after Desir was reportedly spitting on the floor, prompting his roommate to tell him to stop. The argument escalated when the roommate asked Desir to leave and began placing his belongings outside.

During the argument, Desir allegedly pushed the victim and armed himself with a knife, cutting the roommate in several places, according to the report.

As the victim ran to a nearby supermarket for help, the report stated that Desir reportedly chased him, striking him in the back of the head with the handle of a machete and later hitting him with a glass liquor bottle.

The victim sustained lacerations on both shoulders and his left palm and was treated with stitches at Jackson North Medical Center, according to investigators.

They said surveillance video from the supermarket showed the bleeding victim entering the store while Desir fled the scene.

He was later detained by North Miami police.

After questioning, detectives said Desir initially claimed self-defense, giving multiple inconsistent statements about the altercation and the weapons involved. He also sustained minor cuts to his left arm and was treated by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

As of Monday morning, he was being held without bond at the Metrowest Detention Center.
