Miami-Dade mayor, Jewish federation holds news conference to denounce antisemitism
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — More than a dozen Miami-Dade County mayors, including Daniella Levine Cava, will hold a news conference Thursday to denounce rising antisemitism in Florida and around the world.
The annual event, now in its fourth year, is hosted by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and will take place during on the eve of the fifth day of Hanukkah.
Speakers are expected to address disturbing trends in antisemitic incidents and discuss community safety in light of a recent mass shooting in Australia that left 15 people dead, including a Rabbi who had ties to South Florida.
Organizers said the event carries added urgency as antisemitic incidents continue to occur, even as new legislation in Florida has shown that strong action can reduce certain forms of antisemitic activity.
Key indicators cited by organizers include:
- Antisemitic incidents across the U.S. have increased 344% over the past five years.
- Florida ranks seventh nationwide for reported antisemitic incidents.
- Eighty-three percent of antisemitic assaults in Florida occurred in Miami-Dade County.
- Thirty-six percent of antisemitic incidents in Florida took place at Jewish institutions, double the national average.
Local 10 viewers can watch the news conference at 10 a.m. in the video at the bottom of this page.
