Miami International Airport named worst in the world for lost luggage
A Florida airport was voted the worst at handling luggage in a recent analysis that looked at airports throughout the globe.
Miami International Airport, a hub for travel to the Caribbean and South America, loses roughly 306 bags for every million flights and 5.5 bags per 1,000 passengers, according to an analysis by Arka, a California-based provider of custom shipping packaging
About 1,000 flights travel through the South Florida airport every day.
Other American airports to rank in the top 10 are Chicago O’Hare International Airport at No. 2, Denver International Airport at No. 4 and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at No. 9.
Where does lost luggage land?
Worldwide, an estimated 26 million bags are mishandled each year. If they’re unclaimed after 90 days, some may end up at Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro.
The facility, which sells items found inside orphaned suitcases for discount prices, has become known as the kind of place where you never know what you’re going to find, but if you’re lucky, you’ll get it at a bargain.
Over the years, unusual items like an aluminized fire suit, an Egyptian burial mask, a unicycle, a cowboy hat signed by Gary Sinese, a jar full of shark teeth, shrunken head and even a live rattlesnake, have been found.
