Miami ended the opening round of the Leagues Cup on a whimper, especially since their star player, Lionel Messi, suffered an injury near the end of the league-wide pause. The absence of the Argentinian legend was noticeable in the club’s first match back in MLS play, falling 4-1 to in-state rival Orlando City last Saturday. It marked Miami’s second loss in four league matches.
Miami has fallen to sixth in the Eastern Conference, two points back of fourth-place Orlando, and four ahead of New York City FC for eighth.
The Galaxy is having a season worth forgetting. Despite being less than a year removed from winning the MLS Cup, one of the league’s founding members had a horrific start to the season and, despite posting a decent showing in the Leagues Cup, is on its way to a disappointing result.
After getting trounced, 4-0, by the Seattle Sounders last week, LA is last in the league with 16 points, 16 back of the ninth-place San Jose Earthquakes.
