Miami Beach Fire Rescue officials said the “active water emergency” happened in the area between Monument Island and Hibiscus Island around 11:15 a.m. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, City of Miami Fire and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue also responded.

FWC officials said it appeared the sailboat that was carrying six people, a woman and five children, was struck by a barge. U.S. Coast guard officials said two children were killed and a third was unresponsive.

Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Pete Sanchez said there were six total patients, including five children between ages 8 and 12 and one adult. Three children were initially reported hospitalized in critical condition.
