ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A North Miami man is in custody after allegedly opening fire on a Florida Highway Patrol trooper on I-95. I-95 remains closed around 11 a.m. Sunday, north of Palm Beach County. The closure is expected to continue for several hours.

Florida Highway Patrol issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com, which are publishing in its entirety:

>>On 6/8/2025 a BOLO (be on the lookout) was sent out from LWRCC for a 2024 silver Mitsubishi Outlander that had previously fled from Deputies in Hillsborough County. The driver, a 29-yr-old white male had an active warrant. At approximately 5:32 AM Sgt J. Torres with the Florida Highway Patrol located the vehicle traveling north on Interstate 95 around mile marker 126 (Midway Rd.). Sgt Torres verified the vehicle was the same that had previously fled from Deputies in Hillsborough County and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect failed to stop and began fleeing from Sgt Torres. After a short pursuit, Sgt Torres conducted a PIT maneuver (Precision Immobilization Technique). Once the suspect vehicle was stopped, the suspect started shooting at Sgt Torres. Multiple agencies were called in for assistance. Following a brief standoff the suspect was taken into custody. The suspect was then transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured during the incident. The roadway is still closed as of 9:49 AM and will remain closed until the on-scene investigation is complete. Further details will be given once obtained which will include the list of charges.<<
