Colorado Rockies game recap: Colorado Rockies 6, Miami Marlins 4: Win No. 10

The Colorado Rockies remain undefeated after eight-game losing streaks with a 4-0 record in such situations thanks to a desperately needed victory against the Miami Marlins. The Rockies arrived in Miami after making history by being the first team to lose 50 games before getting double-digit wins. The Rockies now finally have their tenth win of the season and it only took 60 games.

Márquez gets it done despite dullness

Rockies starting pitcher Germán Márquez was less than sharp against Miami, especially in the first two innings. He gave up three runs in the first and a fourth in the second, but kept the Marlins off the board for his final three frames. Márquez frequently worked with traffic, giving up nine hits—a career high six of which were doubles—and two walks. However, he found his strikeout stuff later in his start, ending the night with six. Márquez threw his knuckle curveball a season high 38 times.

The Marlin Hunter

Hunter Goodman made up the bulk of the Rockies’ offense tonight. He went 3-for-4 and plated three of the Rockies’ runs, all of which came via the long ball. Goodman hit a solo home run in the third inning to bring the Rockies back within striking distance after a rough start. The second was a two-run shot in the fifth inning to put the Rockies in the lead. Goodman now holds the team lead for home runs with 9 and RBIs with 34. He also scored the Rockies’ first run of the game, being driven in by a Thairo Estrada double in the first.

Keston Hiura and Sam Hilliard provided some much needed insurance in the ninth inning. Hiura hit a deep double that was deflected off the glove of Marlins left fielder Kyle Stowers. He was then brought home by a line-hugging double off the bat of Hilliard. Overall the Rockies scored six runs on 12 hits.

That Beautiful Bullpen

It’s still kind of strange to think that the Rockies bullpen has been a strength of late. They did it again tonight with four shutout innings of relief spread across four pitchers: Jake Bird, Tyler Kinley, Seth Halvorsen, and Zach Agnos. Kinley and Halvorsen both had strikeouts, while Zach Agnos induced a game-ending double play to earn his fourth save of his young career.

Cause for Concern

Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar was removed from the game in the eighth inning. The Rockies gave up the designated hitter to move Ryan McMahon to third base and Orlando Arcia took over at shortstop. Arcia was involved on the game-ending double play.

Manager Warren Schaeffer said after the game that he removed Tovar out of precaution because the shortstop “felt a slight something in his body.”

Coming Up Next

The Rockies will play their second game against the Marlins tomorrow afternoon. Right-handed pitcher Chase Dollander is expected to be activated from the 15-day IL to make the start. He’ll face Marlins righty Sandy Alcantara. First pitch is at 4:40 PM MDT.
