Inter Miami owner David Beckham has hit back at MLS rivals Minnesota United after they labelled his side a ‘pink phony club’ following their 4-1 thrashing of Lionel Messi and Co this weekend. The result moved Minnesota above Miami in the table and they made sure to stick the boot in on social media.

After the game, Minnesota posted a picture of their players celebrating a goal with a screenshot of the club leapfrogging Miami in the MLS standings, with the caption goading their rivals in reference to the Chappell Roan song Pink Pony Club.

Beckham was far from pleased with their jibe as he replied to the post by saying: “Show a little respect, be elegant in triumph.”

But Minnesota refused to back down in their jubilation as they posted another picture showing a banner which aimed another dig at Miami.

It read: “History over hype, culture over cash,” with the words ‘hype’ and ‘cash’ highlighted in pink to reference Inter Miami – who have spent huge sums of money on high-profile players like Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Again, Beckham refused to let their behaviour slide and commented on the post, writing: “Respect over everything.”

Minnesota’s post was backed by a handful of fans who angrily responded to his reply, accusing him of “disrespecting the MLS” and charging high ticket prices.

One said: “Hey David! Your club is the reason why lovely families can’t afford to go to soccer matches.”

Another responded: “You have disrespected MLS and American soccer culture breaking our league’s rules. If you look around more and more fans are starting to reject Messi and Miami outright.”

A third supporter: “We respect culture over cash silly. Did you not read the sign?” as another added: “You should try buying that next, see how it goes.”

Beckham was the pioneer of Inter Miami after founding the MLS side in 2018 after having a clause inserted into his contract at LA Galaxy when he was a player that allowed him to start an MLS franchise.

The Manchester United legend has brought success to Miami after attracting a flock of fans to the club with the high profile signings of stars like Messi, while on the pitch the team won the Eastern Conference in 2024.
