Miami Marlins need to learn from other teams
I brought this subject up before and I still stand by it. The Miami Marlins need to learn from other teams about spending and running the team better. The lack of spending is now leading to a potential MLBPA grievance, and the situation is getting pretty seriously bad. Certain events last week got me thinking. I wonder what lessons The Fish can take from those events.
It’s time for the Miami Marlins to become more serious about winning.
I really hope that Peter Bendix has a good plan and that the Miami Marlins will indeed become a consistently competitive team. I haven’t seen it since becoming a fan of the team, outside of the great 2003-2005 time period. Of course we’re talking about different ownership groups and that clearly played a part as well.
I was disappointed to see the division rival Atlanta Braves sign OF Alex Verdugo last week. It’s not about him being good, as quite frankly he’s coming off of a pretty bad season. He batted just .233/.291/.356, with 13 home runs and 61 RBI in 159 games and 559 AB with the New York Yankees and was worth just 0.8 WAR. He still could’ve been a potential bounce back candidate for The Fish’s uninspiring OF mix. It’s especially true after a recent injury.
It’s clear to me that the Miami Marlins are simply refusing to spend, though maybe Bendix really didn’t see Verdugo as someone who could help the team or be flipped at the Trade Deadline for some propsects. Though the lack of moves to perform the latter is truly odd to me. There were no relievers to sign for that reason at all for example?
Another issue is what the Toronto Blue Jays are doing with their star 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. They’re trying to extend him, why can’t the Miami Marlins do the same with ace Sandy Alcantara. I’m not even talking about giving him a new contract, but at least committing to keeping the fan favorite long-term. It’s just frustrating to watch at this point for me. We really deserve better than this.
