CMU Outlasts Miami in Overtime
OXFORD, Ohio– The Miami University women’s basketball team used a 6-0 run in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, but Central Michigan made enough plays in the extra session to escape with a 69-66 win over the home team at Millett Hall Wednesday night.
Maya Chandler scored 15 points to lead the RedHawks (18-10, 10-7 MAC) offensively. Amber Tretter had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Enjulina Gonzalez added 11 points for the Red and White. Madi Morson had a game-high 16 points for the Chippewas (13-16, 8-9 MAC).
How it Happened:
- Miami jumped out to an 8-0 lead two minutes into the game after back-to-back three-pointers by Gonzalez and Chandler and a transition layup from Tretter. A corner triple by Ilse de Vries made it 13-2 before CMU answered back with 11 straight points to tie the game. A Tretter hoop with 38 seconds left gave Miami a 15-13 advantage heading to the second quarter.
- Cori Lard keyed a 6-0 run early in the second period with two baskets and an assist to put the Red and White up 21-15. Tamar Singer made it 27-23 with a backdoor feed to Tretter and a pull-up jumper of her own at the two-minute mark. The visitors responded to tie the game at 27-all, but Chandler knocked down a baseline jumper with 17 seconds remaining in the half to send the RedHawks to the locker room with a 29-27 lead.
- After CMU took its first lead of the game at 36-34, Miami ripped off a 11-0 run to regain control. Back-to-back triples from Gonzalez and Chandler put the Red and White up 40-36, with Chandler burying another three-pointer to further stretch the lead. Gonzalez capped the spurt with a drive and left-hand finish to make it 45-36 at the 3:21 mark. Tretter beat the shot-clock buzzer with a three off a beautiful feed from Singer in the final minute of the period, helping the RedHawks maintain a 50-44 lead into the end of the quarter.
- A strong move by Gonzalez with 7:23 to go gave Miami a 54-45 lead, but CMU wouldn’t go away. The Chippewas scored the next 15 points to pull ahead by a score of 60-54 with 1:06 left. Singer sliced the deficit in half with an open three-pointer in front of the RedHawk bench to get Miami within 60-57, and Richason drained a clutch three with 12.7 seconds left to knot the score at 60-all. CMU’s Morson missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer, sending the contest to overtime.
- Central Michigan scored the next five points before Richason answered back with a post move to make it 65-62. A Lard layup again made it a one-possession game with 1:06 left in overtime. Miami got as close as 67-66 on a pair of Chandler free throws with 12.1 seconds left, but CMU held on for a three-point win when the RedHawks’ final shot attempt came up short.
