Baseball Falls to Miami in Midweek Matchup at loanDepot Park

MIAMI – The FIU baseball program dropped it’s midweek contest Tuesday night, falling to the Miami Hurricanes, 7-3, at loanDepot Park.

The Panthers (11-3) battled back to tie the game heading into the sixth inning, but a Miami (10-3) grand slam proved to be the difference, sealing the Hurricanes’ victory.

Playing at the home of MLB’s Miami Marlins, the Hurricanes struck first with three RBI singles in the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

FIU responded in the third, cutting the deficit to one. Javier Crespo sparked the offense with a ground-rule double, followed by a Brendan Roney single. Kareh Valentin then doubled to right field to bring Crespo home, and Brylan West added a sacrifice fly to center, making it a 3-2 ballgame.

Panther pitcher David Eckaus quieted Miami’s bats from the third through the fifth innings, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out four. FIU pulled even in the fifth when Austin Dearing delivered an RBI single to make it 3-3.

Miami regained control in the sixth, capitalizing on a bases-loaded opportunity as Daniel Cuvet launched a grand slam to put the Hurricanes ahead for good, 7-3.

FIU tallied six hits on the night, with Crespo and Valentin each recording multi-hit performances. Dearing and Roney also added hits.

On the mound, Logan Runde made his fifth start of the season, allowing three earned runs on four hits in two innings. Tracen Cameron (1-2) took the loss, giving up four runs in one inning of work.

Kevin Martin and Jaydon Bishop combined to pitch the final three innings, surrendering just one hit while striking out four.
