CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Niagara Purple Eagles were held to just one hit in a 10-0 loss to Miami on Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park, dropping their second straight game to open the season.
How it Happened
Niagara starter Matthew DelVecchio (0-1) struggled with control, lasting 2 2/3 innings while allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits and four walks. The Purple Eagles’ bullpen used four additional pitchers but couldn’t slow Miami’s offense, which collected 12 hits.
The Purple Eagles’ lone hit came from right fielder Nate Milk, while the offense struck out 15 times against Miami’s pitching staff. Hurricanes starter Griffin Hugus dominated through six innings, striking out 11 while allowing just the one hit.
Vincent Mauro and Tyler ViVacqua committed errors that led to unearned runs for Miami. The Purple Eagles (0-2) left seven runners on base and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
The Purple Eagles will look to avoid the sweep when they conclude their season-opening series against Miami on Sunday.
