Miami Sweeps The Citadel in Doubleheader


CHARLESTON, S.C. – The RedHawks took both games of a doubleheader against the Bulldogs of The Citadel Saturday with scores of 8-5 and 16-1. In game one, Miami scored four runs in the ninth inning to complete a comeback victory. In game two, Christopher Roa highlighted the stat sheet for Miami, going three-for-three with five RBIs. Miami moves to 2-1 with the wins while The Citadel drops to 1-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • Ty Batusich walked to start the baserunning for Miami in the top of the first. Dillon Baker walked, advancing Batusich to second. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and a sac fly by Dom Krupinski put the RedHawks ahead 1-0.
  • Bulldog Thomas Rollauer led off the bottom of the first with a single. Chandler Anderson walked, and Garrett Dill followed with a single to load the bases for The Citadel. Miami walked Travis Elliot, tying the game 1-1.
  • Anthony Zarlingo opened up the second inning with a walk, and Ryan Novak advanced him to second with a walk. Both advanced on a wild pitch, and Ignacio Gonzalez drove in a run with a single through the left side.
  • Batusich singled to drive Novak home and put the RedHawks ahead 3-1.
  • The Citadel’s Phillip Daniels led off the bottom of the second with a walk and advanced to third on an error as Aryan Patel reached first with a sacrifice bunt.
  • Rollauer came up with an RBI sacrifice bunt to bring the score to 3-2. Anderson took his second walk of the day, and Dill walked to load the bases. Anthony Hauser put the Bulldogs ahead 4-3 with a single to right field that brought Patel and Anderson home.
  • Daniels singled in the bottom of the third, and Patel followed up with a single to advance Daniels to third. Rollauer hit a sac fly to stretch the lead to 5-3 in favor of The Citadel.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth, Batusich took two bases on a shot down the left field line. Baker took an HBP, and Krupinski walked, loading the bases. Evan Appelwick came up with an RBI single to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
  • Krupinski led off the top of the ninth with a walk, and Appelwick struck again with a single to left field. Drew Phillips came in as a pinch runner, and both runners advanced on a sac bunt by David Novak.
  • A wild pitch walked Zarlingo on a full count, and both runners advanced again, tying the ball game at 5-5.
  • Ryan Novak singled, scoring Phillips and putting Miami ahead 6-5.
  • Ryan Novak stole second base, and Christopher Roa recorded his first hit in a RedHawk uniform, an RBI single, to make the score 7-5.
  • Blake Buzzeo drove Ryan Novak home on a sacrifice bunt, capping off a four-run ninth inning for Miami.
  • Patrick Mastrian pitched three straight groundouts to secure the 8-5 win and the save.

 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME ONE):

  • Batusich went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two BB.
  • Krupinski went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run.
  • Appelwick went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
  • David Novak went 4-for-2.
  • Antony Zarlingo scored two runs and two BB.
  • Ryan Novak scored two runs and had two BB.
  • Troy Benko pitched 5.0 innings, giving up three hits and recording two strikeouts.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • Batusich led off the first with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Baker was hit by a pitch.
  • Krupinski reached on a fielder’s choice that sent Baker back to the dugout, and Appelwick put Miami ahead 3-0 with a three-run homer to left field.
  • The Citadel’s Rollauer reached first base on a throwing error by Miami in the bottom of the first. A walk advanced him to second base, and a single by Dill loaded the bases. A walk put the Bulldogs on the board and made the score 3-1.
  • Krupinski led off the third inning for Miami with a single to right center. Appelwick took a walk, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by David Novak.
  • Zarlingo recorded Miami’s first triple of the season with a shot to right center that earned him two RBIs.
  • Roa singled to stretch Miami’s lead to five runs and make the score 6-1.
  • Roa started up Miami’s bats again in the top of the sixth with a single. He advanced to second on a single by Buzzeo. Batusich hit into a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners.
  • Krupinski sent both runners home on a two-RBI single to left field, making the score 8-1.
  • Zarlingo led off the top of the seventh with a walk. He then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. Roa sent Zarlingo home with a sac fly to stretch the lead to eight runs, 9-1.
  • Cooper Katskee pitched three straight outs to render the Bulldogs scoreless in the seventh.
  • Baker hit an infield single in the top of the eighth and advanced to second on a single by Krupinski. Appelwick juiced the bases with a single to left field.
  • David Novak sent Baker home with a sacrifice fly to make it a 10-1 ballgame.
  • Zarlingo singled to left field, moving the score to 11-1. Ryan Novak took four balls in a row to walk and load the bases.
  • Roa smashed a triple down the right field line, bringing all three baserunners around home and making the score 14-1.
  • UCLA transfer Keenan Proctor took an HBP in his first at-bat as a RedHawk and advanced when Batusich took an HBP. Baker singled to left center, scoring Roa and making the score 15-1.
  • Krupinski hit another single to score Proctor and round out a 16-run day for Miami.

 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME TWO):

  • Krupinski went 4-6 with three RBIs and three runs.
  • Appelwick went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs.
  • Zarlingo went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs.
  • Roa went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs.
  • Carson Byers pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three hits and amassing six strikeouts.
  • Cooper Katskee pitched 3.0 innings, giving up no hits and striking out two.

 
UP NEXT: The RedHawks will stay in Charleston for a rematch with Charleston Southern on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
