RedHawks Split Opening Games In South Carolina


COLUMBIA, SC – On Friday evening the Miami University softball team played two games to start off their time at the Carolina Classic. In game one against Appalachian State University, the RedHawks defeated the Mountaineers 9-6 in extra innings. This drops App State to 1-5 on the season. In game two, the University of South Carolina took the win 8-0 in six innings. This brings the Gamecocks to 8-0 on the season. The RedHawks move to 2-5.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • In the top of the second, Kaylee Oh hit a RBI single to center field that allowed Danitza Hernandez and Ella Carter to score and take a 2-0 lead for the RedHawks.
  • Holly Merritt followed that up with a RBI double that scored Oh and Shelby Kunkel to double the Miami lead 4-0.
  • Carter homered in the top of the third, also scoring Chloe Parks to push the RedHawks’ lead to 6-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, App State got on the board via a RBI double, to make it a 6-1 game.
  • The Mountaineers tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single, to cut the deficit to 6-2.
  • Shortly after that, the Mountaineers tied the game up 6-6 with a grand slam.
  • The game remained tied through the end of the seventh, sending the RedHawks into extra innings.
  • It wasn’t until the top of the eleventh inning that another run crossed the plate. Hernandez hit a RBI single up the middle to score Jenna Golembiewski, taking a 7-6 lead for Miami.
  • Mckenna Campbell then followed that with a double to right field, scoring Hernandez and Carter, extending the lead to 9-6.
  • The RedHawks held onto this lead through the end of the inning, to take the win 9-6.

 
NOTES:

  • Oh went 2-for-5 at the plate. Carter went 2-for-4.
  • Oh, Merritt, Carter and Campbell each had two RBI.
  • Erin Pinter, Merritt, Carter, and Campbell each had extra-base hits.
  • Six different RedHawks scored runs.
  • Madilyn Reeves went 5.2 innings in the circle, allowing just seven hits and striking out 10.
  • Léa Chevrier got the win on the bump, going 5.1 innings, not allowing a single run or extra-base hit, and striking out seven. 

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • In the bottom of the third, a three-run home run put the Gamecocks ahead 3-0.
  • On a fielder’s choice and subsequent 2-RBI single, three more runs scored for the Gamecocks in the bottom of the fifth, pushing their lead to 6-0.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, a two-run homer from the Gamecocks brought the score to 8-0 to end the game.

NOTES:

  • Pinter notched an extra-base hit and a RBI.
  • Shelbie Krieger went 4.1 innings in the circle, making her first collegiate start.
  • Chevrier made her second appearance on the bump of the day.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks continue their stretch at the Carolina Classic tomorrow, Feb. 15 in Columbia, SC. Their first matchup is against South Carolina at 3:30 p.m.
