Miami-Dade mayor recommends keeping old incinerator site in new memo

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has released a memo recommending scrapping plans to build a new incinerator.

The executive summary states there is no easy solution for Waste Management and recommends the county continue to long haul waste via truck and rail using the current contracted capacity, while continuing to explore options to build a landfill outside of Miami-Dade County.

The mayor previously recommended building the new incinerator at the site of the one destroyed in a fire last November as well.

It adds that their team extensively pursued potential sites to build a new, state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facility to replace the old facility and is confident that a new facility, which would be built to meet stringent modern standards, would meet disposal needs while protecting both human health and the environment.

The memo lists three options moving forward for the board to consider.

They are using the contracted capacity with Waste Management, building a landfill outside of Miami-Dade County or building a replacement waste to energy facility.
