OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Akron women’s basketball team garnered a 15-point and 11-rebound performance from redshirt senior Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) to lead three Zips scoring in double figures, but fell 76-54 at Miami on Wednesday (Jan. 22).
The Zips (9-10, 3-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Brown, who put together her team-leading fifth double-double of the season. Senior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) added 13 points, while freshman Ni’Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) chipped in as well with 12 points from the bench.
Led by senior Alexus Mobley’s (Indianapolis, Ind.) three offensive rebounds, Akron did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards.
Akron forced 13 Miami turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into 10 points on the other end of the floor. Brown’s four steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
Akron started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run to take an early lead with 7:07 left in the first quarter. The RedHawks then took the lead and entered the second quarter up 19-11.
The Zips were outscored in the second quarter 19-3 and faced a 38-14 halftime deficit.
Akron’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Zips were down 56-30 heading to the fourth quarter. Akron knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 16 total points.
Miami constructed a 67-37 advantage before Akron went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Brown’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 67-45 with 3:38 to go in the contest. The Zips were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 76-54. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 24 points.
