Great Miami River Recreational Trail

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A new section of the Great Miami River Recreational Trail opened today in Old North Dayton.

A ribbon cutting and commemorative ride was hosted by the Miami Conservancy District (MCD) Tuesday for the new bike trail.

“People can get out and go to different communities without getting on the road. You can really enjoy the safety, the security of a nice trail along a river, you get to hear the wildlife, you get to recreate with your friends, you can just be by yourself. You know, being out in nature, and being on a trail, it just makes your day better,” said MaryLynn Lodor, general manager for MCD.

The one-mile section of trail was funded by a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). The trail connects Keowee and Helena Streets.

“The businesses and the residents that live behind this levee can use it every day. They can use it to get to work or to school or just recreate, and that’s important for communities to have access to those amenities in their backyard,” said Lodor.

The section was put in after a 3.95-mile levee was built in the area. The project enhances flood protection while offering an alternative transportation route for local commuters.

Future segments of the trail are planned to be in development soon.
