DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A new portion of bike path is now open in Dayton.

The Miami Conservancy District has just opened a new one-mile section of the Great Miami River Recreation Trail. The segment is located in Old North Dayton, connecting Keowee Street to Helena Street.

The new trail was made possible through a $1.1 million federal grant. Not only will the 14-foot-wide trail offer a new transportation route, but the path also enhances flood protection in the area. Improvements included upgrading the Old North Dayton levee to better protect homes and businesses from potential flooding.

“Upgrading the levee that protects the Greater Old North Dayton area is critical to safeguarding lives, properties, jobs, and businesses,” said MaryLynn Lodor, General Manager of MCD. “I’m excited that the Miami Conservancy District could use these funds to protect the Old North Dayton area from flooding by upgrading the deteriorated concrete that armors the Greater Old North Dayton levee.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on July 23 at 11 a.m., followed by a short ceremonial bike ride to officially open the trail. Those who wish to participate are encouraged to bring a bike.
