Two of the best teams in MLS meet up under the bright lights in South Florida on Saturday, June 1.

Inter Miami and St. Louis SC are set to meet at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Both teams are looking to get back to winning ways, with Inter Miami losing in mid-week action to Atlanta, while St. Louis has lost three on the bounce.

The visitors this weekend had the full week to prepare for this match, so we will see if tired legs from Inter Miami’s veteran stars affect the outcome.

Inter Miami vs. St. Louis live updates, commentary

2nd half kickoff: We are underway for the second half. No changes at halftime.

Halftime: Inter Miami is already out-passing St. Louis, 404-191 after 45+ minutes, and yet it’s 2-2. You can see the different styles very clearly as St. Louis looks to spring the counter attack and dribble forward quickly with a couple of passes before shooting, while Inter Miami has a patient passing attack. xG is in St. Louis’ favor though, 1.2 to 0.9. Says a lot about both team’s level of difficulty with their goals.

Halftime: Inter Miami 2, St. Louis City 2. Fans can’t ask for much more in this inter-conference clash. Messi and Suarez both scored to tie the score for Inter Miami after Durkin and Vassilev, two former U.S. youth international stars who played in Europe and have returned to MLS, gave St. Louis a pair of leads.

Plus, there were two injury substitutions and end-to-end action. Just a classic game so far, even if blood pressure statin medicine will be needed by both coaching staffs.

45th min: GOAL INTER MIAMI! Out of basically nowhere, Messi picks up the ball in midfield, beats two players before playing Alba into space down the left. Alba crosses to the far post and Suarez gets there and just finds the top corner and scores. What a game so far, 2-2, game is tied again!

45th min: Five minutes of first half stoppage time.

45th min: St. Louis is just pinging it around now and working at another speed compared to Inter Miami. Kryvtson with a big block on a cross deep in the box stops an attack but that came after another careless pass, this time from Callender, gave St. Louis the ball in the attacking third.

43rd min: CHANCE Vassilev! A hopeful long ball ends up with Vassilev getting behind the Inter Miami backline but his touch lets him down and his chip shot goes wide of goal. Could have easily been 3-1 and another defensive error for Inter Miami.

41st min: GOAL ST. LOUIS! It’s Vassilev who dribbles into the box off a great feed from Kijima and after a step-over he fires a shot low to the near post that beats Callender. Inter Miami is shocked as are their fans. And it’s an important goal for Vassilev, a former Inter Miami player that they let leave. 2-1, St. Louis City.

40th min: Callender with an easy save from Totland after Klauss had a nice touch with his back to goal to create the space and chance for Totland to take a shot.

37th min: Kijima nearly plays Vassilev through on a breakaway but it’s just cut out by Inter Miami’s backline.

34th min: HUGE SAVE BURKI! Alba gets on a break down the left and feeds Messi on the ground just like earlier but Burki goes to his right and guesses perfectly to deflect Messi’s shot out for a corner kick. Outstanding attack by Miami and equally terrific save.

29th min: Inter Miami is forced to o to the bench as well, as Federico Redondo comes off for Benjamin Cremaschi. Not great for Redondo and a player who just came back from a knee injury a couple of weeks ago.

27th min: Klauss on the other end nearly gives St. Louis the lead again but it’s deflected out for a corner kick. Meanwhile St. Louis City coach Bradley Carnell makes his first change of the night as Alm can’t continue. Hosei Kijima comes on.

25th min: GOOOOAAAALLL INTER MIAMI!! We’ve seen this before, haven’t we? Messi dribbles right, then dribbles left back into the center and it just opens up the field. Alba is wide open on the left and Messi finds him. Alba plays the perfect pass into the middle, no one tracks Messi and he perfectly places a shot past Burki into the net. The speed of play and speed of thought between those two are on another level. It’s a tie game, 1-1, at Chase Stadium.

22nd min: Rasmus Alm goes down after a challenge grabbing his right knee and it looks like he may have picked up a big knock. He’s receiving treatment and we’ll see if he can continue. He’s walking off the field under his own power, which is a good sign.

19th min: Huge play Aviles! Another turnover by Inter Miami leads to another breakaway chance for St. Louis, the pass Pompeu is slightly behind Klauss and Aviles slides in to clear the ball out of the box.

18th min: Messi finds Alba down the left wing and his early cross is stabbed towards goal by Taylor, but Burki made the save.

15th min: GOAL ST. LOUIS! WOW! Chris Durkin, the former U.S. youth international takes a touch at the top of the box on a quickly-taken corner kick and he absolutely smashes a curled shot past a stunned Drake Callender. Inter Miami fell asleep and Durkin made them pay. 1-0, St. Louis.

14th min: Outstanding tackle by Pompeu sets up St. Louis on the break and it ends up in the box at the feet of Vassilev but his shot in the box is blocked and deflected over the bar. Best chance of the night for St. Louis.

11th min: Rojas tries to catch Burki off his line, but his 60-yard shot goes well wide. Would have been a spectacular goal.

8th minute: Matias Rojas decides he’s going to smash one from 35-yards out but St. Louis goalkeeper Roman Burki takes care of it with ease.

7th minute: That’s three times at least where St. Louis has tried a quick transition with a long pass over the top of the Inter Miami defense, trying to catch them out. No luck yet.

3rd minute: It’s end to end action already! Alba plays a great long cross to switch the field to Wiegandt down the right wing, Messi gets the ball in the middle and nutmegs a defender but it’s cleared away up to Klauss, who dribbles at Aviles all the way from the mid-way line to outside the box before unleashing a curler wide and over the goal.

Kickoff: We are underway from South Florida! Referee Allen Chapman gets us underway.

5 mins to kickoff: Both teams are out on the field for introductions!

15 mins to kickoff: One storyline to follow – this may be the last Inter Miami match where we see Messi, Luis Suarez, Rojas, and a few others for the next 3-6 weeks due to international call-ups. The next FIFA international window begins next week and it goes straight into Copa America and Euro 2024.

45 mins to kickoff: Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino makes just one change from the team that lost 3-1 to Atlanta United. Matias Rojas enters for Julian Gressel. Meanwhile, St. Louis City coach Bradley Carnell makes two changes from their last game. Anthony Markanich and Edward Lowen enter for Kyle Hiebert and Njabulo Blom.

1 hour to kickoff: We have lineups! First up, St. Louis City

and here’s Inter Miami

1 hour, 10 mins to kickoff: Last time these two teams met, St. Louis City drubbed Inter Miami, 3-0, on July 15, 2023. It came one week before Messi made his debut for the club in Leagues Cup against Cruz Azul.

1 hour, 15 mins to kickoff: While we wait for starting lineups to be announced, here’s the stat of the year. Wednesday must have been a strange moment for Lionel Messi.

1 hour, 30 mins to kickoff: It’s South Florida, so the weather changes fast, but right now it’s partly cloudy over Fort Lauderdale. Rain is possible during the evening, which could add to the difficulty for St. Louis to keep Inter Miami off the board, as they look to attack every time they have the ball.

1 hour, 45 mins to kickoff: Prior to Inter Miami’s 3-1 loss on Wednesday at home against Atlanta United, the Herons were on a 10-game unbeaten run which included seven wins.

2 hours to kickoff: Taylor Twellman gets us set for the match tonight. He (analysis) will be on the call along with Jake Zivin (play-by-play) for Apple TV.

Inter Miami vs. St. Louis lineups, team news

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba are all available for selection. It may be the last game for more than a month for Messi, Suarez, Matias Rojas, and others who are eligible for selection for Copa America or Euro 2024, so Inter Miami will want to send them off with a big performance.

For others, like Benjamin Cremaschi, he will likely be around until the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics, where he’s expected to be named to the U.S. roster.

Inter Miami projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Callender (GK) — Weigandt, Aviles, Kryvtsov, Alba — Gressel, Busquets, Cremaschi — Messi, Suarez, Rojas.

Inter Miami subs (9): (Lineups released one hour prior to kickoff)

St. Louis City lost midfielder Tomas Ostrak this year for the rest of the season due to an ankle tendon injury, another brutal loss for a team that has dealt with its share of injuries this year. One change we could see this weekend is Aziel Jackson coming back into the starting lineup.

St. Louis City projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Burki (GK) — Totland, Parker, Nilsson, Hiebert — Lowen, Durkin — Vassilev, Jackson, Alm — Klauss.

St. Louis City subs (9): (Lineups released one hour prior to kickoff)
