Candidates for Miami-Dade Sheriff answer questions for voters in forum hosted by Local 10′s Janine Stanwood

MIAMI – A group of potential police chiefs came together on Wednesday night in Miami-Dade County.

The union hall for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Miami was the backdrop. The guests were the 11 people fighting to become Miami-Dade’s top cop.

“I know what it is to be a union guy, I know what it is to do the right thing,” said candidate John Rivera.

The forum was moderated by Local 10 News’ Janine Stanwood.

She challenged the candidates for Miami-Dade Sheriff on how they would lead the eighth largest law enforcement agency in country.

“When I decided to run, my platform was based on community needs and community policing,” said candidate Jose Aragu.

“My platform is very simple,” said candidate Joe Sanchez. “Accountability and transparency in creating the police department that we need to learn and trust the community. Community policing is very important.”

“I also want to ensure we fight gun violence and get illegal guns off the streets and out the hands of criminals,” said candidate John Barrow.

Everything from crime and community policing to unfair eviction policies and controversial legislation were key points discussed by the candidates, who were addressing undecided voters in the audience.

Ramon Granera is a Miami-based construction worker who is taking in every comment with an open mind.

“There’s a lot of experience in this room and a couple of the questions separated the men from the boys,” said Granera.

Five candidates did not participate in Wednesday’s forum.

Voters will ultimately have their first say in the decision when primary elections are held on Aug. 20.
