Man dies after Tesla crashes, bursts into flames in Weston
FORT LAUDERDALE — A man is dead after a Tesla crashed and burst into flames in Weston early Sunday morning.
Around 3:30 a.m., Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Fire Rescue were called to a vehicle fire near Bonaventure Road and State Road 84.
When they arrived, emergency crews found a 2024 Tesla Model 3 “fully engulfed” in flames. Investigators told CBS News Miami that the car was involved in a single-vehicle crash.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the man was driving eastbound on SR-84 and approaching Bonaventure.
As he came to the U-turn lane to go under the Interstate 75 overpass, the man — for unknown reasons — failed to negotiate the curve and drove off the road, striking the support column for the I-75 overpass. Detectives said the vehicle caught on fire soon after, according to a press release issued later Sunday afternoon.
Crews were able to put out the flames but unfortunately, the driver died. He has yet to be identified.
BSO’s Traffic Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances that led up to the crash.
