South Miami caretaker seen on video beating woman with Alzheimer’s, police say
SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – South Miami police arrested a 77-year-old woman on a felony elder abuse charge Tuesday after they said she was caught on camera beating a woman she was caring for.
The victim has Alzheimer’s disease and was in an assisted living facility at the time the crime was reported, an arrest report states.
According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, the suspect, Josephine Gurri, runs Good Family Home, Inc. at 6851 SW 79th Terrace, a licensed ALF. That’s also her residence, the location of the crime and where she was arrested, according to police.
Police said the victim’s granddaughter received a video from a previous caretaker showing Gurri striking the woman “on the buttocks and lower back area.”
Authorities arrested her at around 8 p.m. Thursday, the report states.
Gurri was then taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where she remained held as of Wednesday afternoon.
According to court records, a Miami-Dade judge found probable cause to charge her and ordered her bond set at $1,000 — and to stay away from the victim.
